Springton Reservoir

Welcome to the Springton Reservoir Rehabilitation and Improvement Project

At Aqua, we’re committed to our mission of protecting and providing Earth’s most essential resource: water. This includes delivering clean, safe, reliable water to our customers, and also extends to our commitment to sustainably source and protect our water resources.

Aqua is dedicated to operating and maintaining the Springton Reservoir to ensure its long-term functionality, public safety and preservation for future generations.

About the Project

The Springton Reservoir, also known as Geist Reservoir, was created in 1931 with the completion of the Springton Lake Dam over Crum Creek. The earthen embankment dam stands 75 feet high and spans 1,600 feet in length.

Today, the site stands as a testament to Aqua’s commitment to water resource management.

Serving as a vital catchment area, the reservoir collects runoff from 21.5 square miles of the Crum Creek Watershed and stores 3.5 billion gallons of water. This valuable resource undergoes treatment at the Crum Creek Water Treatment Plant, located five miles downstream, where Aqua produces 20 million gallons of drinking water per day and serves more than 200,000 customers in Delaware County.

Project Overview

At Aqua, the safety and reliability of our infrastructure are incredibly important. As part of our Dam Safety Program, we regularly evaluate hydrologic conditions surrounding the reservoir.

As we approach the hundred-year-mark since the construction of Springton Dam, we recognize the significant development within the Crum Creek Watershed, resulting in increased stormwater runoff conditions.

With evolving design standards and methods for calculating flood events, a recent evaluation has indicated the need to modify the existing spillway to accommodate larger storms. This rehabilitation is consistent with the measures taken for various dams throughout the United States constructed in the same era as Springton Dam.

For this critical project, we have partnered with Gannett Fleming, who will serve as our Engineer of Record. Gannett Fleming is renowned for their expertise in dam safety engineering, with over 100 years of specialized experience in analysis, design and construction support.

A Brief History

In 1925, Clarence Geist purchased the Springfield Consolidated Water Company, subsequently renaming it the Philadelphia Suburban Water Company, which later became Aqua America. The ever-growing demand for water supply across Delaware County necessitated a larger reservoir, surpassing the capacity of the 90 million-gallon Crum Dam Reservoir located downstream.

Planning and strategic land acquisitions led to the establishment of the Springton Dam at the location known as Springton Farms, eventually forming the reservoir we recognize today.

This reservoir, now known as the Springton Lake Dam Reservoir, is a testament to our enduring commitment to serving the community's water needs while preserving our valuable natural resources.
